Politicians often utilize
coercion as a method of power available to them because of their constituent
awarded leadership status. Standing in the gap to protect and act for the will
of the people, politicians often use coercion in a bully-like manner to
manipulate penalties and rewards in their political environment. Political
power in any form and for any reason is difficult to manage and requires
competencies in negotiation, communication, problem-solving, social judgment,
emotional intelligence, prudence, and social influence using bias-free valid
and reliable knowledge. Just like any professional bureaucracy, politicians
come from a variety of backgrounds and specific knowledge; however, it critical that
they also develop the right skills and competencies to avoid bully-like
behaviors while they are protecting and acting for the will of the people.
